    Armored vehicles in Rome

    Armored vehicles in Rome

Two capitals in one city: the Italian state and the Holy See. Embassies to both, ministries, and a historic centre where traffic is limited.

    • From one full day with driver
    • Self-drive from two days
    • Rates on request

Armored vehicles in Rome from Nero Line are available on request: a certified armored saloon or SUV, at a protection level from VR4 to VR10, with a trained security driver or for your own licensed driver. Rome is the seat of the Italian government and surrounds Vatican City, so it hosts embassies to two states, frequent official visits and large religious gatherings. Much of the historic centre is a limited traffic zone, and access is planned with each booking. Rates are on request, and around a week of notice is advisable.

    Arriving in Rome

Ciampino, southeast of the city, handles a large share of private flights into Rome. Fiumicino, on the coast to the west, is the main commercial airport. Both are connected to the city by roads that can be slow at peak hours.

The driver follows your flight and positions the vehicle according to each airport's procedures, then plans the route into the centre around traffic and any closures for official events.

    Embassies, ministries and the Vatican

Rome hosts embassies accredited to Italy and separate embassies accredited to the Holy See. Add the ministries, parliament and international agencies, and a single day can include several official addresses, each with its own access rules.

Around the Vatican, crowds and security arrangements change with the calendar. Our drivers plan set-down points that respect the restrictions in force and keep walks short.

International agencies based in Rome, including several United Nations organisations, bring their own conferences and delegations to the city, often outside the centre.

The historic centre and its limited traffic zones

Much of central Rome is a limited traffic zone, the ZTL, where access is controlled by cameras and permits. Hotels and residences inside it are reached by arrangement, and many streets are simply too narrow for a large vehicle.

We plan access as part of the booking. Outside the centre, Parioli and the area around Via Veneto hold residences and hotels that are easier to reach, and the Castelli Romani and the coast are within reach for a day out.

Summer brings stays on the coast and in the countryside of Lazio and Tuscany, often in villas reached by long private drives.

    Frequently asked questions

    Protection levels

    Protection levels in plain words

Civilian armored vehicles are commonly rated on the VR scale. The higher the number, the heavier the threat the body and glazing are tested against, and the heavier the vehicle becomes.

    VR4

    Handguns, up to .44 Magnum.

Discreet protection for city travel. The lightest class, closest to a standard car in weight and handling.

    VR6 to VR7

Rifles. VR7 corresponds roughly to the former B6 rating.

Suited to executive and diplomatic travel where rifles are part of the risk assessment.

    VR9

Military rifles. Corresponds roughly to the former B7 rating.

High protection for elevated risk profiles. Heavy, with a licence requirement to match.

    VR10

The highest level certified for a civilian vehicle.

Available on request, subject to availability and longer lead times.

Not sure which level fits your trip? Choose "advise me" in the request form and we will recommend one.

    How it works

    How a request works

    1. 01

      Tell us the trip

Dates, cities or route, number of passengers and the protection level you have in mind. A rough plan is enough to start.

    2. 02

      Receive a written offer

We confirm the vehicle class, protection level, driver arrangement and positioning, and send a written offer. Rates are on request and stated in the offer.

    3. 03

      Confirm and verify

On confirmation we complete identity checks, and for self-drive the licence check and the security deposit. A confidentiality agreement can be signed first.

    4. 04

      Handover where you are

The vehicle is positioned to your airport, hotel, residence or venue at the agreed time, with the driver briefed on your programme.
