Birmingham to Marbella: Luxury Car Guide for BHX Travelers (2026)
Table of Contents
Birmingham Airport (BHX) to Malaga (AGP) takes roughly 2h 45m on a direct flight, and from May to October there are typically 4 to 7 daily departures across BA, easyJet, Jet2, TUI and Ryanair. From the moment you land at AGP, a Marbella luxury car delivered to arrivals puts you on the A-7 in under 20 minutes and at your villa in Sierra Blanca, Nueva Andalucia or Sotogrande inside the hour. Delivery to AGP is typically 150 to 250 EUR each way, and a week in a Rolls-Royce Ghost or Bentley Flying Spur runs 7,500 to 10,500 EUR all in. This guide is written for Midlands-based travellers planning the BHX-to-Marbella week, not for anyone trying to rent a car in Birmingham itself.
Key Takeaways
- BHX to AGP is a 2h 45m direct flight, with BA, easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair all flying the route between March and October.
- BHX consistently undercuts Heathrow on long-stay parking (roughly 8 to 11 GBP/day at BHX vs 22 to 30 GBP/day at LHR T5).
- For families from Solihull, Coventry, Stratford or Wolverhampton, BHX is a 25-to-50-minute drive vs 2h 30m to Heathrow or 2h to Manchester.
- BA Club Europe is the only true premium cabin on the route year-round, with easyJet's Up Front and Jet2's Premium Seats as cheaper "extra legroom" alternatives.
- Coventry Airport (CVT) and BHX's FBO handle private jets up to a Bombardier Global 6000, giving Midlands fliers a sub-3-hour door-to-Marbella option.
- AGP arrivals to a Marbella villa is a 45-to-60-minute drive on the A-7 toll-free coastal road.
- Post-Brexit you do not need an IDP to drive in Spain on a UK photocard licence, but your UK car insurance does not cover a rental car in Spain.
- All-in for a 7-day Marbella rental in a Rolls-Royce Ghost is roughly 9,800 EUR with delivery, insurance and deposit hold.
BHX to AGP: the flight options
Birmingham Airport is the third-largest UK airport behind Heathrow and Gatwick by passenger volume, and Malaga is its single busiest international leisure route. The competition keeps fares honest and the schedule dense.
Who flies the route
| Carrier | Cabins available | Typical frequency (May to Oct) | Hand baggage | Hold baggage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| British Airways | Euro Traveller, Club Europe | 1 to 2 daily | 23kg + small bag included | 23kg from Club fare or paid |
| easyJet | Standard, Flexi, Up Front | 1 to 3 daily | 1 underseat free, large bag paid | Paid extra (15 to 25kg) |
| Jet2 | Standard, Premium Seats | 1 to 2 daily | 10kg cabin bag included | 22kg often included on package |
| TUI | Standard, Premium | 3 to 5 weekly (charter) | 10kg cabin bag | Often included with holiday |
| Ryanair | Standard, Plus, Flexi Plus | 1 daily | Small bag only on Basic | Paid extra (10kg or 20kg) |
Schedules thin out from November to mid-March, when only BA, easyJet and Jet2 typically maintain daily service.
Premium cabin reality
No carrier flies a long-haul aircraft on this leg, so there is no flat-bed or true business product. What you can get:
- BA Club Europe: middle seat blocked, Aspire lounge access at BHX, priority boarding, hot meal. Roughly 380 to 650 GBP one-way in shoulder season.
- easyJet Up Front: rows 1 to 3, fast bag drop, speedy boarding. Adds 60 to 110 GBP on top of Standard.
- Jet2 Premium Seats: extra legroom exit row, priority bag drop, food and drink. Adds 50 to 90 GBP per leg.
For two adults flying Friday-to-Sunday-week, the Club Europe gap over Standard easyJet is typically 600 to 900 GBP for the pair. Worth it once a year; for a third Marbella trip in twelve months, easyJet Up Front does the job for a quarter of the cost.
Baggage and the golf-club problem
UK travellers heading to Marbella often pack heavy: golf clubs, infant seats, a wheeled hard case per adult plus carry-ons. Golf clubs on easyJet are 50 GBP each way pre-booked. BA Club Europe includes 32kg so a club bag fits inside that allowance. Ryanair Basic is a trap if you have anything beyond a small underseat bag; the "low" fare can balloon past 200 GBP per person once you add carry-on, hold and seat selection.
When the luggage exceeds two large cases plus a club bag per couple, talk to us about a Mercedes V-Class as a second car alongside your booked supercar.
Why BHX often beats LHR/MAN for this trip
Midlands fliers default to Heathrow because the carrier choice is wider on long-haul, but for a short hop to AGP the calculus is different.
Drive time and parking
| From | To BHX | To LHR T5 | To MAN T1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solihull | 20 to 30 min | 2h 15m to 2h 45m | 1h 50m to 2h 30m |
| Coventry | 25 to 35 min | 2h to 2h 30m | 2h to 2h 30m |
| Stratford-upon-Avon | 40 to 55 min | 1h 45m to 2h 15m | 2h 15m to 2h 45m |
| Wolverhampton | 35 to 50 min | 2h 30m to 3h | 1h 30m to 2h 10m |
| Worcester | 50 min to 1h 10m | 2h to 2h 30m | 2h 30m to 3h 10m |
Add the parking gap. BHX long-stay sits around 8 to 11 GBP per day pre-booked. Heathrow long-stay T5 runs 22 to 30 GBP/day. On a 9-day trip you're looking at 75 to 100 GBP at BHX vs 200 to 270 GBP at LHR.
Flight times and security
easyJet runs an evening BHX-AGP that puts you poolside in Nueva Andalucia by midnight, and a late-night Sunday inbound that returns you to the M42 before midnight. BHX security to gate in 30 minutes is realistic with priority lanes; LHR T5 in summer is closer to 60 minutes. If you're aiming to arrive 90 minutes before a 06:55 departure rather than 2h 30m, BHX gives you back the lie-in.
Private jet from BHX or Coventry
For the Midlands family or business owner who's done the easyJet hop one too many times, the Birmingham region has two viable private-aviation entry points.
Birmingham Airport (BHX) FBO: a single Signature Aviation FBO handles private movements. Slots are reasonable outside the morning commercial peak; the 3,052m runway accepts everything from a Cessna Citation to a Bombardier Global 6000 at full payload.
Coventry Airport (CVT): the Midlands' dedicated business-aviation airfield, 25 minutes from central Birmingham. No commercial traffic, faster turnaround, lower handling fees. Runway length restricts the very largest jets, but a Citation Latitude, Embraer Praetor 600 or Bombardier Challenger 350 all operate easily.
Aircraft choice for BHX/CVT to AGP
| Class | Example aircraft | Seats | Flight time | Indicative one-way charter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light jet | Citation CJ3+, Phenom 300 | 6 to 8 | 2h 45m | 14,000 to 22,000 EUR |
| Midsize | Citation Latitude, Hawker 900XP | 7 to 9 | 2h 35m | 22,000 to 32,000 EUR |
| Super-midsize | Praetor 600, Challenger 350 | 8 to 9 | 2h 30m | 28,000 to 42,000 EUR |
| Heavy | Falcon 7X, Global 6000 | 12 to 14 | 2h 30m | 45,000 to 70,000 EUR |
For a family of six with luggage flying late on a Friday and returning Sunday week, a Praetor 600 round-trip from Coventry to AGP typically lands around 65,000 to 85,000 EUR all-in, with an empty-leg return slot occasionally available. For deeper context on aircraft selection, see our light jet vs midsize jet guide and the Gulfstream, Bombardier and Embraer comparison.
On arrival at AGP: the car handoff
Malaga-Costa del Sol Airport sits 8km southwest of central Malaga, and the drive to Marbella is a 45-to-60-minute run on the A-7 (toll-free) or the AP-7 (toll, slightly faster off-peak). Here is how the handoff works when your car is delivered to arrivals.
The process
- You land, WhatsApp the driver while taxiing.
- Clear immigration via the UK-passport e-gates (5 to 10 minutes for most British arrivals).
- Meet the driver in arrivals, sign on the iPad, two minutes of car walk-around video.
- The car is in the short-stay deck directly above arrivals. You're on the A-7 westbound in 5 minutes.
- Booked a chauffeur transfer? The driver does the AGP-to-villa run while you ride in the back; the rental car is handed over at your villa.
The full AGP private-jet experience, including the FBO at the General Aviation terminal, is covered in our Malaga AGP private jet charter guide.
The drive in
AGP to Marbella is 55km on the A-7. The stretch past Torremolinos and Fuengirola is where the Mediterranean opens up on your left and the Sierra Blanca rises on your right. Allow 90 minutes in Friday peak hours from June to August, 45 minutes off-peak.
Best cars for the Midlands traveller
UK customers gravitate toward British marques on holiday for the obvious reason: brand familiarity, right-hand-drive habits, and a sense that the car suits the suit you packed. Marbella is left-hand-drive, of course, so this is your chance to spend a week in the LHD version of the car you already love.
Where most Midlands clients land
- Rolls-Royce Ghost (2025) for the couple celebrating a milestone or the family doing the chauffeured-transfer-plus-self-drive split. The only car on the list where the kids will actually fall asleep.
- Bentley Flying Spur (2021) for the four-up trip with two adult passengers in the back. Faster off the line than the Ghost.
- Range Rover Vogue LWB Autobiography (2025) for families of five or six. The LWB rear is genuinely lounge-like.
- Lamborghini Urus (2022) or Urus S (2024) for the kids-want-something-loud trip. Fits four adults; "Dad's rented a Lambo" is a story the kids tell at school.
- Ferrari Portofino (2022) for two adults wanting the open-top Costa drive without committing to a Huracan.

Suggested 7-day Midlands itinerary
The "golf and supercars" trip is the single most-booked Marbella week for our UK clients. Here is how it shapes up.
- Day 1, Saturday: BHX 14:50 to AGP 18:45 on BA. Car delivered to arrivals. 55 minutes on the A-7. Dinner at Nobu inside Puente Romano.
- Day 2, Sunday: 40-minute drive south on the A-7 to La Reserva Club, Sotogrande. Lunch at The Beach, La Reserva's pool club.
- Day 3, Monday: Take the Ferrari or Porsche Cabrio for Marbella old town and Puerto Banus harbourfront. See our Marbella to Puerto Banus supercar guide.

- Day 5, Wednesday: Day yacht from Puerto Banus. See the Puerto Banus boat hire guide. Pershing 7X and similar sit at 12,000 to 18,000 EUR per day.

- Day 7, Friday: Beach club lunch at Trocadero Arena or Puente Romano Beach. Saturday morning car return at the villa, transfer to AGP.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) after Brexit?
No. For UK photocard licence holders, your standard UK driving licence is accepted in Spain for short-term car rental. Bring the physical card; the rental staff need to see it, not photograph it from your phone.
Does my UK car insurance cover the rental car?
No. UK comprehensive policies do not extend to a hired vehicle in Spain. Our rentals include third-party, collision damage and theft cover as standard; premium "zero excess" upgrades are available. Your annual travel insurance may include CDW excess reimbursement, which is worth checking before adding our zero-excess product.
Can I take the car to Gibraltar?
Yes, with prior written authorisation. There is a small administrative fee and the border queue can run 30 to 90 minutes inbound. Tell us at booking; we'll arrange the green-card extension.
Are infant seats and booster seats available?
Yes. Group 0+ infant carrier, Group 1 forward-facing, and Group 2/3 booster all available at 8 to 15 EUR per day. Tell us ages and weights when you book and we'll fit before delivery.
What deposit is held on the card?
For most cars, 2,500 to 5,000 EUR pre-authorised on a personal credit card at handover. For the Ghost, Urus and McLaren, it sits at 5,000 EUR. Released on card return, usually within 5 to 10 working days. Debit cards are accepted on a case-by-case basis with a higher hold.
Is there a fuel surcharge or "refuel fee"?
The car is delivered full. Return it full and there is no charge. If you'd rather skip the petrol station on the way back, we'll refuel at cost plus a 25 EUR service fee.
Can I do a one-way to Madrid, Seville or Valencia?
Yes. One-way transfer fee depends on the city pair: Marbella to Madrid is typically 400 to 600 EUR, Marbella to Seville 250 to 350 EUR. Booked at the start.
What if my BHX flight is delayed or cancelled?
Free changes up to the rebooking window. If the flight is cancelled outright and you're rebooked for the next day, we hold the car at our cost overnight at AGP. We monitor inbound flight numbers when you give us the BA, easyJet or Jet2 reference at booking.
